"Bullitt" was the first movie to show a real high-speed car chasing scene, with two muscle machines: a green '68 Ford Mustang GT-390 Fastback (plate California JJZ-109) and a black (and wonderful!) '68 Charger R/T 440 (plate California RDR-838).
The movie's story is that Walter Chalmers (interpreted by Robert Vaughn) needs to keep a special witness for a weekend, because he is the key to unmask the "Organization". His name is Johnny Ross, from Chicago.
Chalmers contacted to Frank Bullitt (interpreted by Steve McQueen) and his mates to take care of the witness in a old hotel until Monday, but on Saturday this witness is murdered by two serial killers.
On Sunday, Bullitt, when he goes out, in his Mustang, he realizes two men from a black Charger are the guys who killed Ross!
This part (in the DVD is the 14th chapter and named as "High-speed chase") is the best of the movie. At the beginning, the Charger pursuits slowly the Mustang, but at one time the killers get scared and now the Mustang is pursuiting slowly the Charger!
When you see the Charger's driver buckles his belt and steers, just hear the 440 Magnum sound and the tires! Now the cars are starting pursuiting in fact! Steve McQueen (Bullitt) and Bill Hickman (killer driver) are now showing his driving skills on two classic muscle machines. The top speed during the chase was almost 200 km/h!
About the Charger:
The Charger used by the two killers during the movie was a R/T with 440 Magnum engine, which had 7,2 liters of displacement and could develop 375 horsepower along with a 1x4 bbl carburetor. Unfortunatly it didn't get a Hemi (because it was too expensive) and (but it deserved!) Magnum wheels. Every steer the car made, one or two wheel covers go off... The Charger was driven by Bill Hickman (1921-1986), an unknown but very experienced driver that starred in many movies as a stunt driver.
About the Mustang
The Mustang, choosen by Steve McQueen, who drove it, had fastback body, green color and a 390 engine under hood. The engine, along with the suspension, had been tuned to keep up with the Charger and to hold the jumps during the scene. The original power was 335 horsepower. Now a day, its existence is a mistery for many people, but a farmer owned the car years ago and up to now he's not interested in sell the car. The car didn't have a good treatment. Steve McQueen also tried to buy the car some years after the movie, but he was dead in 1980.
O Chargerze:
O Mustangu
Mustanga wybrał Steve McQueen do filmu. Samochód z nadwoziem fastback, koloru zielonego i silnikiem 390 pod maską. Silnik i zawieszenie zostały podrasowane dla potrzeb filmu, by dotrzymać kroku Chargerowi, a także, by wytrzymać skoki i hopsy podczas filmu. Oryginalna moc to 335 KM.
